Alister Bell

Operations and Development Manager, The Gobbins

Brought back to life over 100 years since the path originally opened, Alister Bell lead the re-awakening of The Gobbins cliff path as the Operations and Development Manager.

“I was involved in Young Enterprise while at Newtownabbey College of Further Education now Northern Regional College.  As part of our BTEC course in Business and Finance we had to undertake a mini company, following an interview process I was appointed the Assistant Managing Director later to become Managing Director.  It’s very hard to put into words the experience I gained as it was so wide ranging from leading a team, trying to get the best out of others, working with outside companies, meeting with college officers, to planning, marketing and finance.  The company returned a share dividend of £5 for every one £1 invested – in the 1990’s that wasn’t bad and 3 charities received £100.

“The idea of developing a business plan, marketing plan, dealing with difficult situations all helped build a firm basis for my further studies and in my working life.  It was a really fantastic opportunity and don’t treat it as just another project really participate in it for the experiences you gain from the Young Enterprise programme could allow to develop your own business, who knows you could end up on dragons den.”
