The Institute of Directors Young Enterprise Alumni of the Year 2016 recognises the achievements of a Young Enterprise Alumnus who has displayed the skills, drive and passion to build their own business inspired by their experience with Young Enterprise’s enterprise education programmes.
Last year, the inaugural award was presented to Stephen Henderson of Ruach Music.
Stephen commented: “When at Kilkeel High School, I took part in numerous Young Enterprise activities, from workshops making accessories to sell, to developing lucrative business concepts to pitch to a panel. Along the way I took on board not only the basic skills used in business, but the passion and excitement that accompanies them. As a result at the age of 16, through witnessing percussionists’ enthusiasm regarding the progression of the percussive instrument, the cajon, I founded Ruach Music.
“Since initiating trading, I have made over 500 instruments, selling them into countries including the USA, Canada, Germany, Poland, Japan, Singapore and Australia, been accepted onto Northern Irelands accelerator programme, Propel, and raised over £14,000 on online crowd funding site, kickstarter.com. Ruach’s pre-series product line, the “MK-Range” acquired a great response from the market, but musicians wanted more. Taking things to the next level, Ruach has just launched the “LIVE Series”, the drum that never goes out of tune.”
